Introduction

Geab operates through three companies, the parent company Gotlands Energi AB, and the subsidiaries Gotlands Elförsäljning AB and Gotlands Elnät AB.

Gotlands Elnät AB distributes electricity to households, businesses and the Gotland community. It enables the energy transition through an efficient electricity grid that meets the needs of grid capacity, electricity and delivery quality. With its 7,000 km long grid of which 1,200km is overhead line, they transport electricity to approximately 43,500 customers on Gotland.

Background

Geab has been an important Volue customer for many years. Over that time, they have looked to increase their efficiency in grid management and operations through technology and process transformation. During this period, Gotland has used Volue’s products, including NETBAS, to digitise and streamline its processes. NETBAS provides reliable and secure documentation of cable networks for grid companies across the Nordic region, supporting operational excellence and data integrity.

To enhance its processes further, Geab adopted Volue’s Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) in 2024. On Gotland, Volue’s ADMS supports real-time grid operations across all voltage levels, from 0.4kV to 70kV, addressing both outage management and daily tasks, such as planning, grid connections, and executing grid maintenance. The solution offers robust decision-support tools, including network analysis capabilities, to optimise grid operations.

Additionally, ADMS fosters seamless communication between customers, field crews, control rooms, and other parts of the organisation. This streamlined communication ensures more efficient workflows, faster response times, and enhanced service delivery.

Overcoming weather challenges

The winter of 2025 saw significant power grid outages due to heavy snow and ice. Clas Lingren, Control Room Manager, Geab, explains how Volue’s ADMS helped overcome the associated challenges. “When we began using the product, we worked closely with Volue to ensure it would not only be compatible with the Swedish market but also integrate seamlessly with our systems. This collaboration allowed us to achieve great success.

“We transitioned from having no advanced management system to implementing Volue’s solution, and the benefits have been immediate. One of the most significant advantages is the time it saves us, especially when we need it most, like during this winter. Moving from paper maps to a digital system that’s live for both myself and my colleagues in the control room, as well as for field teams addressing issues, has been a game-changer. It provides everyone with a comprehensive overview, enabling us to identify problems faster and implement solutions more quickly. This, in turn, enhances the experience for our customers.”

Richard Schytte, SVP, Volue Power Grid, said: “Geab has been a valued customer for many years, and we deeply understand and appreciate their commitment to enhancing efficiency in grid management and operations. As the first adopter of our operational solution, ADMS, in Sweden, we collaborated closely with them to ensure it met their unique needs and requirements."

We were particularly pleased to see the positive impact of our ADMS on outage management during the recent challenging winter weather conditions. Beyond the advanced support tools, the software significantly improved communication, delivering a streamlined and more efficient response process.
