The European day-ahead auction market has changed fundamentally over the past decade. The progressive rollout of market coupling — most recently through the Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC) framework — has unified previously fragmented national auction processes into a pan-European clearing mechanism, expanding the geography of relevant trading obligations for energy companies across the continent. For participants active in Central Western European markets, this creates both opportunity and operational complexity: more bidding areas to manage, multiple auction windows with distinct cutoffs, and a growing financial cost attached to missed or erroneous bids.
Managing these obligations through separate exchange portals or legacy tools is no longer sustainable at scale. Volue is connecting Volue Auction Trader to EXAA, the Energy Exchange Austria, giving participants access to EXAA's day-ahead auction markets directly from a single, validated bidding environment. The connection is available from June 2026.
EXAA — Energy Exchange Austria — is Austria's leading power exchange, headquartered in Vienna. Active across five market areas — Austria, Germany, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands — EXAA operates modern day-ahead auctions designed to meet the evolving needs of the European energy market. Through transparent, efficient, and secure trading mechanisms, market participants gain reliable access to short-term power markets across Europe.
EXAA offers two distinct day-ahead auctions. The 10:15 independent auction provides the first spot price reference of the trading day, offering participants an early and valuable price signal for all five market areas before the main market coupling window opens. It supports fully integrated trading in quarter-hourly products, as well as individual hours and 15 block products. The 12:00 market coupling auction connects EXAA’s trading members to the pan-European Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC). Together, the two auctions provide market participants both an independent early price reference and seamless access to the pan-European clearing process through a single exchange.
The combination of both auctions further creates attractive opportunities for portfolio optimization through EXAA’s innovative spread products. The Location Spread enables participants to trade on price differences between Germany and another bidding zone, including Austria, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands, while the Cross-Auction Spread allows participants to capture price differences between the 10:15 and 12:00 auction sessions within the same trading platform. Together, EXAA's auction and spread products offer a comprehensive trading environment that combines early price transparency, access to the European day-ahead market, and valuable portfolio optimization opportunities.
Volue AuctionTrader already supports participation in 13+ European power exchanges from a single, exchange-agnostic interface covering both Day-Ahead and Intraday Auction markets. Adding EXAA extends that coverage to the Austrian; Belgian, French, German and Dutch bidding areas, within the same validated bidding workflow. The possibility to quickly and reliable switch between exchanges is offering market participants more options and flexibility in their day-to-day trading, making it possible to make trading decisions based on daily developments, without being limited by missing automatic integration of trading venues in local systems. Market Participants can therefore make more use out of their membership at trading venues by unlocking more trading options.
For energy traders, generators, battery storage operators, and industrial participants with EXAA obligations, the connection means access to EXAA directly within Auction Trader, without the need for a separate exchange portal. Every bid submitted through Auction Trader is validated against exchange market rules and customer-defined internal risk limits before it reaches the exchange. This multi-layer validation is designed to prevent the type of operational errors that remain among the most significant sources of financial exposure in auction trading. Participants also gain a consolidated view of their EXAA positions alongside all other exchange obligations, backed by a full audit trail.
"We're seeing growing demand for European exchange connectivity, as customers manage more markets and want to do it without added complexity — that's the direction we're taking Auction Trader. EXAA is our next big step, and further connections will follow soon."
— Helmut Spindler, General Manager Commercial Operations, Volue
"Our goal is to make access to EXAA's markets as seamless as possible. The integration with Volue gives our members another reliable and automated way to participate in our day-ahead auctions, allowing them to focus on trading while benefiting from secure and validated connectivity."
— Andrea Benckendorff, CEO, EXAA
The EXAA integration is part of a planned sequence of new exchange connections to Auction Trader in 2026, alongside GME and OMIE. Full integration to our new Multi-Market Trader platform is also near, which will allow seamless combination of auction trading workflows with other markets like intraday continuous and ancillary. As European market coupling continues to expand the geography of relevant auction obligations, Volue's aim is to ensure market participants can access every relevant exchange from the same validated, integrated platform — without adding operational complexity.
