The Hidden Risk in Your Price Forward Curves

Why Traders Need a Time Series Hub, Not Just a Spreadsheet

Market volatility does not wait for your pipeline to catch up.

Since 1 October 2025, every European bidding zone has cleared day-ahead power in 15-minute market time units. That single change quadrupled the granularity of the price data your desk consumes. If your price forward curves still depend on a chain of spreadsheets, overnight extracts and one analyst's Python script, the risk is no longer theoretical. It is priced into every position you hold.

The volume problem is already here

Intraday activity on EPEX SPOT reached 241.2 TWh in 2025, up from 214.5 TWh in 2024, driven by renewables, storage and algorithmic trading. Growth continued through 2026. June alone traded 24.3 TWh, 18.5% above June 2025.

Price behaviour changed with it. Wholesale prices rose in 21 EU countries in 2025, and the increase concentrated in gas-heavy morning and evening hours rather than across the day. In the same year, seven EU countries recorded negative prices in 5% or more of all hours.

Read those two facts together and the implication is sharp. The shape of the curve now carries more commercial weight than its level. Shape is exactly what a fragmented data process loses first.

What breaks when price data lives in fifteen places

Four failures show up on almost every desk running manual price data pipelines.

  • Desks disagree. Trading, risk and forecasting each pull the same series from a different source, at a different vintage, in a different granularity. The reconciliation meeting becomes a standing item.
  • Curves update at pipeline speed, not market speed. Recalibration waits for a manual step. In a quarter-hourly market, a curve refreshed on an hourly rhythm is already describing a market that has moved.
  • Audit trails have gaps. Under REMIT, market participants must retain records of transactions and orders for at least five years, and algorithmic traders must retain strategies, parameters and risk controls on the same horizon. A spreadsheet lineage rarely survives that question.
  • Knowledge concentrates in individuals. When one person maintains the script that builds the curve, absence becomes operational risk.

None of this is a storage problem. It is a decision-quality problem, and it compounds every time a new market, product or asset class joins the portfolio.

What a time series hub does for a trading desk

A time series hub is a single platform that collects time series from every source, harmonizes units, granularities and time zones automatically, validates values against configurable rules, and delivers a clean, versioned result to every downstream system.

Volue PowerTSM® applies that pattern to trading data specifically. Price forward curves, market inputs, position data, asset valuations and risk reporting all draw on one validated store. Recalibration runs as a background process rather than a queued manual task.

The scale behind it is production, not pilot. PowerTSM® processes over 17 petabytes of time series per month and manages more than 100-million-time series in production, across 100+ utilities in 15 European countries, with 35 years of energy domain expertise behind the platform. Data teams working on it report up to 80% less time spent preparing data that already existed, simply in the wrong shape.

For a trading audience, the practical outcome is narrower and more useful. Every desk quotes the same number. Curves move when the market moves. The reconciliation meeting stops being necessary.

Three time dimensions, one consistent view

Trading data is not one timeline. It is three, and most tooling handles only one properly.

  • Historical. What actually happened, including every correction and restatement applied after the fact.
  • Operational. What is happening now, at second or quarter-hourly resolution, arriving continuously from markets and assets.
  • Forecast. What is expected, across multiple vintages, scenarios and horizons.

Full 3D timescale management holds all three in one consistent, auditable structure. That matters most when someone asks a question after the trade. Which curve vintage informed this position? What did the forecast say at 11:40, before the revision? Who changed this value, when, and why?

PowerTSM® versions every value change with author, timestamp and the value changed, across all three dimensions. Backtesting a strategy against the data as it actually appeared at decision time becomes a query rather than an archaeology project. Risk and compliance get the same answer as the desk, from the same source.

Integration without disruption

The most common objection to centralising price data is the migration itself. That objection is answerable.

Traders keep working in Excel™. Native integration brings the full platform into the spreadsheet, and the IntelliSense formula editor suggests energy-specific functions as the analyst types, which cuts formula errors in complex calculations. Quants keep working in Python. Analysts keep their Grafana and Power BI dashboards. More than 250 REST API endpoints connect the hub to the existing toolchain out of the box, and new assets or markets connect through the same interface rather than through bespoke integration work.

Deployment runs as cloud SaaS or on-premises, so the decision fits existing security and data residency requirements instead of overriding them. Adoption typically starts with one use case, often the price forward curve process itself, and expands from there. The existing stack stays in place while the data foundation underneath it changes.

Benchmark it against your own PFC workflow

The strongest argument for a purpose-built hub is a direct comparison against what your desk runs today.

The Volue PowerTSM® Proof of Value program does exactly that. Your curves, your markets, your granularity, your reporting requirements, tested before any commercial commitment. If your current process wins, you will know. If the hub wins, you will know that too, with numbers rather than assertions.

Quarter-hourly markets, negative price hours, and a growing battery fleet are all pushing in the same direction. The desks that treat price data as infrastructure rather than as a daily chore will price that volatility more accurately than the ones that do not.

Frequently Asked Questions

A time series hub is a central platform that collects, harmonizes, validates and versions of energy time series from every source, then delivers them to downstream systems. For price forward curve management, Volue PowerTSM® holds market inputs, curves, position data and risk figures in one validated store, so every desk works from identical numbers.

Price forward curve maintenance consumes time because market inputs arrive in incompatible formats, granularities and time zones, then require manual harmonization before recalibration can run. Energy data teams spend up to 80% of their time preparing data rather than acting on it. Volue PowerTSM® automates the preparation step entirely.

A spreadsheet-based curve process recalculates on demand and stores no reliable lineage. Volue PowerTSM® recalibrates continuously in the background, validates incoming values against configurable rules, and versions of every change with author, timestamp and reason. The difference shows curve freshness, cross-desk consistency, and audit readiness.

Centralising trading data in Volue PowerTSM® leaves existing systems in place. Traders continue working in Excel through native integration; quants continue in Python, and dashboards continue in Grafana or Power BI. More than 250 REST API endpoints connect the hub to the current toolchain, deployed as cloud SaaS or on-premises.

Volue PowerTSM® processes over 17 petabytes of time series data per month and manages more than 100-million-time series in production. More than 100 utilities across 15 European countries run the platform today, with linear performance from pilot scale to enterprise scale and results returned in fractions of a second.

Under REMIT, market participants must retain records of wholesale energy transactions and orders for at least five years, and algorithmic traders must retain strategies, parameters and risk controls. Volue PowerTSM® versions every value change with author, timestamp and the value changed across historical, operational and forecast dimensions, supporting those obligations directly.
