Volue, a leader in technologies and services that enable its customers to succeed in the energy transition, has signed a contract with Enel Generación Chile for the provision of its Smart Power software to achieve an optimal usage of the hydraulic resource.

The project will see the use of Smart Power to support the management of Enel’s run of the river hydroelectric power plant operations in Chile, including at least 10 power plants. The project started in December 2023 and is planned to have the first operative use in September 2024.

Managing Hydropower Assets

Volue Smart Power will support Enel in Chile in the optimisation of the hydropower resource based on highly detailed watercourse modelling and its central and powerful data management system.

On top of this, the Volue solution will forecast the natural inflow in the different catchment areas using temperature and precipitation data. The inflow model covers the main hydrological processes in the catchment, calculating snow and glacier accumulation, melting evaporation and inflow delays from soil moisture, ground water and lakes.

Trond Straume, CEO at Volue, said: “Volue Smart Power was developed and introduced to address the growing complexity of power plant management and to enable our customers to harness the full potential of their flexible energy assets. The significant interest we've witnessed in our solution is a testament to its value. We are thrilled that the Enel Group is showing again with this project the trust in Volue after a previous Proof Of Concept implementation in Chile and the successful implementation in Italy.”

Enel in Chile is a leader in the country's renewable energy market, with a diversified portfolio comprising of wind, solar, hydroelectric, and geothermal. Enel is a multinational power company and a leading integrated player in the global power and renewables markets. At a global level, it is the largest renewable private player, the foremost electricity distribution network player by number of grid customers served, and the biggest retail operator by customer base.

Volue Smart Power

With more weather dependent market fluctuations, price volatility and changes in market design, power production planning and trading has become more challenging. Volue Smart Power optimises assets and connects them with the markets, resulting in increased efficiency and maximised profits.

By automating and optimising the production planning and short-term trading process, Volue’s Smart Power software suite contributes to increased revenues for power producers. Customers can optimise the use of hydro, thermal, wind, solar and batteries to maximise profits and provide enhanced decision-making support for trading processes.
