Reading and usage guide

This folder contains everything you need to explore, understand, and begin applying a field-tested implementation of ArcGIS Utility Network for balanced three-phase distribution grids. It is the result of real-world experience from two of Europe’s most advanced DSOs — Elvia in Norway and N1 in Denmark — combined with the modelling expertise built up at Volue through multiple large-scale UN migrations.

The intent is straightforward: to let you stand on the shoulders of those who have already done this work, so that you spend less time discovering what is achievable and more time making it operational. Everything here is shared as a gesture of goodwill, with the aim of accelerating consistent, high-quality UN adoption across the industry.

The recommended starting sequence is simple:

  • Open the Implementation Guide (component 2, PDF). Read the Executive Summary and Chapter 1 to orient yourself in the content and identify the reading path most relevant to your role.
  • Open the ArcGIS Pro project (component 8, .aprx). The project is pre-configured with map views, layer groups, and symbology aligned to the implementation guide and will work correctly as long as the .aprx file and the geodatabase remain in the same folder structure as provided.
  • Consult the Appendix of the Implementation Guide before exploring the dataset freely. It provides a structured, step-by-step walk-through of the sample data: what to look at, what to look for, and how each feature relates to the modelling principles in the main guide.
  • Use the spreadsheets (components 3 and 4) as reference companions: the Asset Types & Rules spreadsheet to navigate the asset model and corresponding UN rules, and the Attribute Metadata spreadsheet to understand every attribute field you encounter.

The full terms governing use of this dataset and implementation guide are set out in Chapter 6.4 of the Implementation Guide (“Gesture of Goodwill, Liability, and Permitted Use”). Please read that section before proceeding. The key points are:

  • The dataset and guide are provided as-is and are not intended for operational or production use.
  • Permitted use covers internal exploration, learning, conceptual evaluation, and dialogue directly related to the modelling patterns described in the guide.
  • The dataset may not be used for product development, commercial exploitation, training activities unrelated to this guide, or redistribution outside the receiving organisation. Reverse engineering of the dataset, asset package, or any associated configuration in any form is prohibited.
  • Any citation or reuse of text from the guide must reference the document clearly.
